Interesting Facts

I love reading interesting, weird facts or useless bit of trivia. Here are some which I found while surfing on the net..

1. India has never invaded any country in the last 100000 years of history. (see we are peace loving people so stop with the terrorist attacks)

2. The roar that we hear when we place a seashell next to our ear is not the ocean, but rather the sound of blood surging through the veins in the ear. (I did not know that)

3. Men’s shirts have the buttons on the right, but women’s shirts have the buttons on the left. (I wonder why)

4. India has the largest number of Post Offices in the world. (smile).

5. Every time you sneeze some of your brain cells die. (Does this mean people who sneeze a lot are dumb :P )

6. When hippos are upset, their sweat turns red. (weird.. I sooo want to see a hippo sweating red, from far of course)

7. The lion that roars in the MGM logo is named Volney. (Who knew he had a name)

8. The sound you hear when you crack your knuckles is actually the sound of nitrogen gas bubbles bursting. (Nitrogen gas bubbles???)

9. The only part of the body that has no blood supply is the cornea in the eye. It takes in oxygen directly from the air. (Good thing.. or else our eyes would be red)

10. Large kangaroos cover more than 30 feet with each jump. (whoaa.. 30 feet..)

11. If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle; if the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle; if the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural cause. (I am going to pay attention to the horse from now on)

12. Female black widow spiders eat their males after mating. (lol poor guys)

13. More germs are transferred while shaking hands than kissing. (so stop shaking hands and start kissing)

14. Dolphins sleep with one eye open. (not very trusting are they)

15. Ants and honeybees don't sleep. (they should)

16. All Polar bears are left handed. (hmmm)

17. The only known poisonous bird in the world is the hooded pitohui of Papua, New Guinea. The poison is found in its skin and feathers. (a poisonous bird???)

18. The average computer user blinks 7 times a minute, less than half the normal rate of 20. (so remember to blink when you're surfing)

19. In Hong Kong a betrayed wife is allowed to kill her cheating husband but she may only do so using her bare hands. (murder is legal?? what a weird law.. good thing women are not that much into violence :P )

20. Honey is easier to digest as it has already been digested by honeybees. (yuck. no wonder I hate honey)

The Reader..

I just recently saw the movie The Reader and I loved it. The story is so different, so unique. There is a lot of nudity in the movie ( and I mean really a lot and a little unnecessary ) still the main focus is on the story and not on sex. Normally in movies it is possible to classify the people as 'good' or 'bad' but in this movie it is hard to classify Kate Winslet's character. She is a naive uneducated woman who has an affair with a young boy. The boy becomes her reader, he reads stories to her. She finally ends the affair and moves away while the boy grows up to become a lawyer but still misses her. While studying he comes to know that Kate Winslet is in the middle of a trial and is among the German guards who are responsible for the death of around 300 Jewish women.
The movie tries to show that Kate Winslet was essentially a good woman and if she would have been educated she probably would have not made the decisions she made but on the other hand what she does is inexcusable and she needs to be punished.
The performances by Kate Winslet and David Cross are outstanding and Kate Winslet deserves all the accolades shes got. The reason why I loved this movie is it is so different from the Bollywood masala movies that I usually watch.

Another thing that struck me was in Bollywood movies all the actresses are glam dolls. They are young and pretty and have tiny, meaningless roles in which they just have to look pretty and dance. If an actress crosses 30 or gets married she is considered to be old. Women centric movies are rarely made in India, whereas in Hollywood most off the leading actresses are in their 30s or 40s and they still do good roles. Its not fair, Bollywood is too male dominated. Shahrukh Khan is still the reigning king even though he's above 40 but you won't see any actress who's above 40 and still works.

My mom - Living with cancer

Super Mom

Mom, you're a wonderful mother,
So gentle, yet so strong.
The many ways you show you care
Always make me feel I belong.
You're patient when I'm foolish;
You give guidance when I ask;
It seems you can do most anything;
You're the master of every task.
You're a dependable source of comfort;
You're my cushion when I fall.
You help in times of trouble;
You support me whenever I call.
I love you more than you know;
You have my total respect.
If I had my choice of mothers,
You'd be the one I'd select!
By Joanna Fuchs

This post is dedicated to my mom, she is really special. She is not glamorous, bold or breath- taking. She is a simple middle class mother but she is special. She has been living with cancer for the past two years and I have not known anyone with such a positive attitude towards life. She is the strongest person I know. She has even amazed the doctors with her fearless attitude. She is a wonderful person and does not deserve so much pain. I am not just saying that because she is my mom, ask anyone who knows her.

She has lung cancer and according to our doctor, cannot be completely cured. She is a frequent hospital visitor. I have seen her in acute pain, I have seen her get better and then get sick again. Sometimes I lock my bedroom door and cry into my pillow because I don't want to cry in front of her. The chemotherapy is still going on and she is still fighting. In-spite of all this she is more worried about me, my future, than herself. How can anyone be so selfless. She does not want me to miss my chance of going abroad for further studies but how can I leave her in this condition. Even if I don't go and take up a job I will still have to leave the city. She will blame herself if I give up my career and stay at home.

My mother has taught me so much, to face difficulties with a positive attitude, to keep smiling, I hope that I grow up to be as strong and confident as she is. She wants to see me succeed and I want her to get well. I don't know what will happen in the future, I don't know where my career will take me, I don't know where my mom will be, all I know is that I love my mother.
I know I don't say it enough but I love you mom.

Fake IPL Player

I love this fake IPL player. This guy has a really great writing style. And the things he writes about are so entertaining, much more interesting than the IPL matches. I don't think he is a complete fake, he is probably someone who is a part of the KKR squad or at-least someone who has access to all the information. I am genuinely surprised he hasn't been caught yet. I mean it can't be that hard to catch some blogger right, unless the blogger is tech savvy and is taking precautions. The blogger claims that he is a player but I doubt it, why would a player jeopardize his own career by letting out secrets about the people he should be kissing up to. The funniest and most spicy parts are those involving the nightlife of the players, the clubbing, the parties, the squabbles. This guy has mentioned some really big names and seems to hate nearly everyone he writes about. The nicknames that he uses are hilarious. Now there is talk about him revealing his identity. I am really curious to know who he is.. is he really what he claims to be? If he is real and does reveal himself won't he get into trouble? But whoever this writer is he should start writing professionally...

Voting

This time there were a lot of ads everywhere asking the youth of India to vote, which is great we should vote but how many people really take an interest and find out information about the candidates. I asked our maid who she voted for and she said she voted for the lotus. I asked her if she knew which party lotus stands for and she said it must be Shiv Sena. She did not even know the lotus stands for BJP. I asked her why she voted for the lotus and after some incoherent answers she finally said that's what people in her area were doing.
Its not not just her even some of my friends gave answers like 'my parents told me' or 'even he voted for them' but most didn't vote at all. Some people don't even know which candidates are standing in their area.
I have heard a lot of people say the parliament is full of criminals and illiterate people. If all of us could do a little background check on the candidates before voting we could avoid that. And its really not that hard, read newspapers, use the internet.... just don't vote blindly.

Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog millionaire is a movie directed by Danny Boyle, it is based on a boy who lives in a slum in mumbai who after facing many hardships ends up on the show 'Who wants to be a Millionaire'. I heard celebrities like Amitabh Bachan, Shilpa Shetty condemned the movie because it showed India in poor light. Amitabh Bachan said the movie projects India as a dirty underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots.
Is he forgetting the fact that India IS a developing country and there ARE many people in India who live below the poverty line.
Even though India has a rich culture, talented and intelligent people and also some very rich people but we cannot deny the fact that a lot of the population is illiterate and lives in slums. These celebrities are probably used to moving around in AC cars and living in huge bungalows and cannot see the other side of our country.

Although I felt seriously insulted while watching the part where the boy says 'this is the real India' and the American gives him money and says 'this is the real America'. I mean what is the director trying to say white guys are good and brown guys are bad? Danny Boyle doesn't know Indians at all.
